On April 29, 2026, the Dare County Tourism Board Special Committee for the Outer Banks Long-Range Tourism Management Plan (LRTMP) toured some of the most vulnerable areas along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and NC 12 on Hatteras Island.
The in-person experience provided Committee members with a first-hand look at several “hot spots” on Pea Island, Rodanthe, Buxton and Hatteras Village, elevating the group’s awareness of the natural challenges and threats that are facing this fragile stretch of the Outer Banks and the communities that are directly impacted.
The opportunity to discuss these challenges and opportunities was beneficial as the Committee continues its work to implement the LRTMP, which recommends supporting strategies that minimize environmental impacts, collaborating with local and regional partners to ensure infrastructure and development initiatives consider sustainability, resident and visitor needs, and advocating for initiatives that will help maintain and preserve the vitality of our shorelines.
