Wright Brothers National Memorial
Few things have had a greater impact on the course of human history than the development of air travel. Our world has gotten considerably smaller since Orville and Wilbur Wright first set foot upon Big Kill Devil Hill a little more than a hundred years ago, with the intention of making mankind’s most enduring shared dream of flight possible. Wright Brothers National Memorial, one of the OBX’s three National Parks, celebrates the journey of invention and discovery taken on the outskirts of Kitty Hawk, NC in 1903. The immortalized fathers of modern aviation weren’t native to the Outer Banks, but they were family like so many of our visitors today.
Enjoy the newly remodeled visitor center and the interactive activities and exhibits on aviation, historic preservation, and STEAM-based activities (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) provided by local and regional partners. Once inside the newly renovated visitor center, visitors will embark on a journey through the lives of Orville and Wilbur Wright, exploring their characters, diving into problems they solved and the methods they used that ultimately led to their first flight on December 17, 1903. Inside the Flight Room, visitors will once again be able to view the reproduction 1903 Wright Flyer - the flyer that made history during the first flight - along with a brand new 16-screen video wall! Standard hours are Sunday-Saturday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM with closures on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Christmas Day. Your pets are welcome at Wright Brothers National Memorial. Your pet must be on a leash no longer than 6’ at all times. Pets are not allowed in buildings. Please, for your pet’s sake, never leave them unattended. Also, for everyone’s and the environment’s sake, clean up after your pet.
