Embrace solitude and serenity as you embark on a soul-rejuvenating journey to Duck, North Carolina. Nestled along the pristine shores of the Outer Banks, Duck offers the perfect sanctuary for those seeking solace amidst nature's embraces. I recently visited Duck for a solo mom retreat, needing time out and solace after a stressful start to the year. I chose Duck as it’s a much quieter part of the Outer Banks offering more respite from constant Go Go Go and allowing me to reconnect to myself and nature to recharge my batteries. If you’re in need of a similar retreat, then here’s how to enjoy tranquility on a Duck getaway.

Unwind by the poolside with a refreshing drink in hand, or savor exquisite coastal cuisine at one of the resort's award-winning restaurants, featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Treat yourself to a rejuvenating massage at the tranquil Spa at Sanderling, where skilled therapists will melt away your stresses and leave you feeling utterly renewed.

I had a few things planned for my trip like bike riding into Duck Village and enjoying all that has to offer. But as soon as I stepped onto my private balcony and saw the view, I canceled them all, so I could simply relax and enjoy the magnificence of what I had right in front of me. I did, however, keep the following activities at Pine Island in my plans…

2. Kayak the Audubon Pine Island Sanctuary

A two-hour guided kayak tour through the tranquil waters of the Audubon Pine Island Sanctuary was the perfect activity for my restful vacation. We had the most perfect Spring day with clear blue skies, perfectly calm water, and no wind threatening to turn the paddle from graceful to intense. As we paddled the winding waterways, immersed in the untouched beauty of this coastal gem our guide shared a lot about the history of the sanctuary and its importance in providing a haven for migrating birds.

Currituck Sound has always been the home of birds, the name Currituck, originating from the Native American word Coratank meaning where the geese fly. That meant in the 1800s the area attracted many wealthy businessmen seeking hunting expeditions. Waterfowl numbers drastically dropped, but thankfully, in 1918 stricter regulations were put in place minimizing such detrimental impact to wildlife.

In 1979, protection increased when developer Earl Slick donated land to the National Audubon Society who created the now 2,600-acre coastal sanctuary to protect and preserve the unique ecosystem of the region. Over the years, wildlife has returned to around 30,000 waterfowl each year (still a tenth of what it once was). Your guide will point out much of the bird life from graceful egrets to majestic ospreys and small songbirds.

3. Wander the Pine Island Sanctuary Nature Trail

Lace up your hiking boots and venture into the heart of the Audubon Pine Island Sanctuary. If you’re seeking more solitude than a guided kayaking tour (or in addition to), the sanctuary has an easy and scenic 2.5-mile (one way) nature trail along what was once the old dirt road between Duck and Corolla.

The canopied path, lined with gorgeous loblolly pines and twisted live oaks, winds its way through maritime forests and marshlands. There are overlooks on the trail that provide sweeping views of the Pine Island, Currituck Marshes, and Currituck Sound. And of course, plenty of birds swooping by!

4. Witness a Duck Beach Sunrise

Awaken your senses with a breathtaking sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. Head to the shore in the early morning hours and watch in awe as the sky ignites in a blaze of color. I know you’re tempted to sleep in, but after decades spent watching sunrises around the world, I can confidently say, the Outer Banks has some of the best. Dolphins typically swim by, and you’ll almost have the beach all to yourself. I can’t think of a more tranquil and beautiful way to welcome the new day with a sense of wonder and gratitude.

5. Embrace Relaxation on Duck Beach

Walk just a few steps from your luxury suite at Sanderling, along your private beach access path, to sink your toes into the soft sand beside the gently crashing waves. The resort has beach chairs and umbrellas you can use to elevate your beach comfort. Now alternate between naps, refreshing swims, and catching up on your favorite books and letting the rhythm of the ocean wash away your cares.

6. Savor a Sunset at Paper Canoe Restaurant

Do not leave Duck without ending your day with dinner at the iconic Paper Canoe Restaurant located on the tranquil waters of the Currituck Sound (and only across the road from Sanderling). Their American gourmet cuisine focuses on fresh and uncomplicated yet flavorful dishes ranging from locally sourced Outer Banks seafood, handcrafted pasta, and mouthwatering wood oven specialties. Deciding what to eat will be difficult, but my recommendation is the shrimp and scallop risotto. The scallops in my dish were the best I’ve had yet in America and very reminiscent of what we get in Australia. Paper Canoe’s elegant, intimate atmosphere and friendly staff paired beautifully with its front row views to a spectacular setting sun.

Ending my trip with that magnificent pink and purple sunset brought me an overwhelming sense of gratitude and peace on a level I haven’t felt in a long time. I was so happy to see my soul again. I hope you find the same on your tranquil solo escape to Duck in the Outer Banks.
