The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is the lead marketing and promotional agency for The Outer Banks of North Carolina and is funded by one percent of the occupancy tax and one percent of the prepared meals tax, collected in Dare County. Below is some information about the area, along with applications and entry forms available for our industry partners. Please feel free to view the forms and email or print them as needed. Located on the bypass at Milepost 1 in Kitty Hawk (just pass the Home Depot), and operated by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the center provides information on attractions, events and directions. The center also offers an accommodations reservation center, rest rooms, public phones, and picnic area. Rest areas are open 365 days a year; welcome center is open 363 (closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day), from 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Dec, Jan, Feb till 5 p.m. and Jun, Jul, Aug till 6 p.m.)

The center also offers an accommodations reservation center, rest rooms, public phones, and picnic area. (877) 629-4386. outerbanks.org ![]() U.S. Weather Bureau Station/Hatteras Welcome Center Operated by The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the center provides information on attractions, events and directions. Welcome center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March to December. The center, built in 1901, housed in the first U.S. Weather Bureau Station. The station played a key role in the nation's developing meteorological network, and endured some of the worst storms of the 20th century until decommissioned in 1946. The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau offers free listings and links to Tourism Based businesses in Dare County. Below are the following items you will need to print, fill out, sign and return to the bureau if you are interested. Only businesses that have main offices/home office in Dare County will be listed. Our site is funded by Dare County taxpayers and our legislation states we can promote Dare County only.
Businesses listed on outerbanks.org must be a Tourism based business.
Private Cottages – Only cottages located in Dare County that pay Dare County occupancy tax will be listed. Please provide proof of paid occupancy tax.
If your cottage is new to the rental program and you have not yet rented it on your own, you must provide us with your Tax ID# before you can be listed on outerbanks.org (as you will not have a paid occupancy tax receipt yet). For more information on how to obtain a Tax ID# call (252) 480-0709. Cottages already listed with a rental company (i.e. Sun Realty, Stan White, etc.) will not be listed individually.

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is a premier source of information about special events happening throughout the destination. Thus, the Bureau's staff encourages all Dare County tourism-related entities who are hosting special events, to submit details about their events to the Bureau for inclusion in the annual Travel Guide and official website for travel planning. Most events will also appear on North Carolina's State Tourism website at www.visitnc.com as well as North Carolina's Northeast website at www.visitncne.com.

The Dare County Tourism Board recognizes the natural resources that have attracted citizens and visitors to Dare County and the physical beauty of our coastal environment is Dare County's greatest asset. The GOSPL program is available to all Governmental Municipalities in Dare County as well as the County of Dare. There is no application, rather written proposals are required and must demonstrate applying organizations' ability to meet the GOSPL criteria. GOSPL Resolution
