Botanical Art Program at the Elizabethan Gardens
Fall and winter art classes taught by renowned artists for 2009

Elizabethan Gardens - Art Class 2009Manteo, NC (September 29, 2009) – The Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island, is presenting a fall and winter Botanical Art Program sure to enlighten new and experienced artists of all ages. Beginning in October, the first of the series is Color, Light, and Form in Dry-Brush Watercolor with artist Patricia Savage. Savage grew up in North Carolina and currently resides in Raleigh, N.C. She has been a professional artist since 1987. Among other honors and awards, Patricia's botanical paintings have been featured in Modern Botanical Art — Eden Re-imagined (2008) and The Pastel Journals' 6th Annual Pastel 100 Competition awarded Patricia with Best in Wildlife and Honorable Mention in Wildlife.

Savage teaches at the University of North Carolina Botanical Garden's Botanical Illustration Certificate Program and is a member of the NCBG's Advisory Council. She teaches workshops and university classes in Watercolor, Pastel, Composition, and Color Theory. Her paintings have been shown at a number of museums and annual shows around the world, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, the Hiram Bleauvelt Museum, the Wildlife Experience, the Bell Museum of Natural History, the National Geographic Society, the U. S. Botanic Gardens, and Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom.

Savage’s October class will feature the dry-brush watercolor technique, which requires multiple layers of transparent watercolor. When painted correctly the final painting glows like a stained glass window. Working on a single painting, students will learn the art of painting one thin, transparent layer atop another thin layer, without picking up the pigment below. Other themes addressed in class are good positive and negative spaces, creating a focal point, establishing strong value contrasts, adjusting color relationships, and learning to evaluate and correct mistakes. This three day class will be held October 20-22, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily and the cost is $119.00 per student. Class size is limited; please call 252-473-1554 to register.

The second class in the Botanical Art Program at The Gardens is in November and will be taught by Janis Schneider, a talented botanical illustrator originally from New York and currently residing in North Carolina. Schneider has spent her lifetime exploring issues of color, line, shape and form. She has worked as a potter, a fabric designer, a graphic designer, and an illustrator. Schneider’s class, entitled Botanical Illustration, emphasizes the history of botanical illustration and uses the traditional medium of watercolor to depict flowers, fruit and vegetables. This class is for those people who love the natural world and would like to try their hand at creating their own botanical illustrations. The class will cover drawing and painting flowers, fruit and vegetables using traditional watercolor techniques. Pigments, papers and brushes will be discussed in depth and basic plant structure will be covered. This is a three day class will be held November 19-21, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. For more information or to register visit www.elizabethangardens.org or call 252-473-1554.

In December, Linda Miller will teach the Christmas Rose in which students will make a great gift and holiday card creating a Christmas Rose botanical painting. Based in Virginia, Miller is a talented, experienced botanical artist and a member of The American Society of Botanical Artists. Miller’s class is open to all levels, especially for beginners without any drawing or watercolor experience. Each student will create a (8 by 10 inch) painting using traditional wet and dry brush techniques and learn how to mix a variety of greens, commonly used in botanical art. Students will also create a smaller study (4 x 6 inch) that can be added to a holiday card. This two day class will be held December 15-16, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily.
