Mickey T. Daniels started working in his father’s crab house at the age of 11. Lke many deep-rooted Outer Banks families, his waterman heritage can be traced back to as far as anyone can remember. In his case, his great-great grandfather. Commercial crabbers and fisherman play a key role in the local economy and embody the working spirit that has enabled generations of Daniels to bring families across America fresh North Carolina seafood. Today you can taste the fruit of their labors at Outer Banks restaurants and markets that serve or sell fresh crabs, shrimp and fish caught in our estuaries and offshore waters. Or you can try crabbing yourself during your visit, and with a little patience and luck, you can experience his Outer Banks.

Crabbing

All you need is a length of cord with suitable bait, chicken necks or fish heads do nicely, tied to one end. Throw the bait into the water, wait a few minutes, then pull on the line gently to see if you get a nibble. Other methods use circular crab nets and collapsible crab traps. Crabs can be caught in local sound waters from late spring into early fall, but the best time is May, June and July.
