Pat and Neal Moore have been long-time volunteers for Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. They serve the refuge in many ways, but are certainly most well-known for their expertise in birding. They have led and continue to lead Friday morning bird walks on Pea Island year-round. They have been on call to lead by request, individuals and groups from various clubs, schools, colleges. Both have been honored by being named as Outstanding Volunteers for Pea Island- putting their names on the permanent list.
Nature at its best
The Outer Banks is a haven for nearly 400 species of birds. Bird watching is enjoyable throughout the year, but it is especially good during the fall and winter. An exceptional birding area is the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, located on the north end of Hatteras Island. It's a wintering ground for thousands of snow geese, Canada geese, tundra swans and 25 species of duck. Observation platforms are located throughout the refuge. Visitors center open year round from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For more information call (252) 987-2394 or (252) 473-1131. Click here to receive your free Official Outer Banks Travel Guide.
