The Outer Banks of North Carolina ®

Brackish/Freshwater Fishing

The Outer Banks offers great freshwater fishing in the Currituck Sound, Kitty Hawk Bay and Colington Harbor - which supports a large population of largemouth bass. Bass season begins in April and lasts through November, with peaks in mid-April to early June and in September and October. During the summer, white and yellow perch can be caught and even some catfish can be caught in the brackish waters. Recommended baits in the spring months are crank and spinner baits; during the summer, worms are a good selection. Freshwater fishing licenses are required and can be obtained at bait and tackle shops.

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, a public authority, is the lead marketing and promotional agency for The Outer Banks of North Carolina® and is funded by 1% occupancy and 1% prepared meals tax, collected in Dare County.
