Now is the perfect time to visit North Carolina’s Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, now nationally recognized as a destination for exploring unique and fascinating coastal heritage and special natural places.

The itinerary for this newest national byway features drives along barrier islands awash with national landmarks and coastal villages and two car ferry rides. Travel to Ocracoke Island, in the middle of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway, is by ferry or private boat or airplane. Specially-designed ferries are operated by North Carolina’s ferry system, the largest on the East Coast.

This coastal byway is already a special place for the American people. The byway travels through two national seashores, Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout, and two national wildlife refuges, Pea Island and Cedar Island. Along the byway are four historic lighthouses and world famous stopovers for migrating song birds and waterfowl.
